“The Nighthawk Star”
メルカリを見ていたら、この本 “The Nighthawk Star“ ”が目に留まった。これは有名な宮沢賢治の『よだかの星』の英語版（ラダーブックLevel 1：1000語）である。
『よだかの星』というと、宮沢賢治の作品を『法華経』という視点から解説した北川前肇の『宮沢賢治 久遠の宇宙に生きる』にも出てきた（ココ参照）。『法華経』的な理解はともかくとして、1000語レベルならば、スラスラ読めるだろうから、読んでみようかと思いました。
“The Nighthawk Star” は、宮沢賢治の童話 『よだかの星』の英語版である。ラダーシリーズのLevel １ （1000語）として収録されている。
良く知れているように宮沢賢治の童話の背景には、仏教的な意味がある。（上述の北川の本や角川文庫版の『注文の多い料理店』などを参照）

『よだかの星』は、普通に童話としても楽しめるが、そのような背景を知って読むとまた味わいが違ってくる作品となっている。
1000語レベルで本文は37ページなので、簡単に読める。音声をダウンロードできるため、Listening教材としても役立つ。
内容とレベルの紹介として、幾つかの部分を抜粋する。
まず、よだかを紹介している冒頭の場面：
Nighthawk was a very ugly bird. His face looked as if it had brown leaves stuck all over it. His beak was very flat and his mouth was so wide it reached round to his ears. He couldn’t walk around very well and then only for a few meters at a time. All the other birds felt bad when they saw his face. (p.3) （抜粋）
北川が問題としている虫を食べないと生きていけない存在であると気づく場面：
Nighthawks flew up into the sky again. Another beetle went into his mouth. It was not easy to swallow – it scratched his throat as it went down. Nighthawk’s heart seemed to jump. He began to cry loudly as he flew round and round in the sky.
“Ah, I kill so many bugs every night.,” he thought. “There’s only one of me, but this time I’m the one who’s going to killed … by Hawk! Ah, that is so hard, so sad. What can I do? Maybe I should stop eating the bags and starve … No, Hawk would kill me before that… I know ! Before that happens, I will fly away – far, far away. (p.15) （抜粋）
太陽のもとへ行こうと飛び立った場面：
The mist had gone. Sun was Starting to rise. Exactly in the east. His light was so bright, it made Nighthawk feel dizzy. But he made himself fly like an arrow straight into it.
“Mr. Sun, Mr. Sun!” he cried out. “Please take me to your place! I don’t mind being burnt to death. Even a ugly body like mine will give out a little light when it burns. Please take me to your place!” (p20) （抜粋）
