“The Life and Strange Surprising Adventures of Robinson Crusoe”
“Robinson Crusoe” は、有名デフォーの小説『ロビンソークルソー』のOXFORD BOOKWORMS版である。原作は長編小説であるが、それをBOOKWORMS STAGE２（700 headword）、本文を40ページに抑えretoldされている。
内容は、良く知られているように無人島に取り残されたロビンソン・クルーソーの28年間の生活である。ロビンソンは、その行動力と機智により山羊を飼いならし、コーンを育ててパンを焼くまでに自活している。
本書巻末のABOUT THE AUTHORによると、デフォー自身の人生もロビンソンに負けず劣らず波乱に満ちたものだったようだ。彼は、ヨーロッパ中を旅しながらビジネスをしていた。そして戦いにも参加し、教会と政府を批判したため投獄され、スパイとして働き、新聞を発行している。
デフォーは、60歳頃から小説を書き始めた。『ロビンソン・クルーソー』はその最初の小説でもっとも成功したものである。

まずは、ロビンソンが大きなカヌーを創る場面である。
So I decided to make myself a boat. I cut down a big tree, and then began to make a long hole in it. It was hard work, but about six months later, I had a very fine canoe. Next, I had to get it down to the sea. How stupid I was! Why didn’t I think before I began work? Of course, the canoe was too heavy. I couldn’t move it! I pulled and pushed and tried everything, but it didn’t move. I was very unhappy for a long time after that. （抜粋）

Many people call Robinson Crusoe the first English novel. It appears in many different languages, films are made of it, and the story of Crusoe on his island is still enjoyed today by both children and adults all over the world. （抜粋）
